Neocutis S.A. was founded in February 2003 as a spin-off from the Medical School of the University Hospital of Lausanne, Switzerland. It is a privately held specialty bio-pharmaceutical company focused on wound healing, dermatology and skin care.

Through years of research, physicians discovered fetal skin has a unique ability to heal wounds without scarring. Inspired by this, medical researchers at the University Hospital of Lausanne, Switzerland created a biotechnology process to extract the rich proteins responsible for scarless wound healing from cultured fetal skin cells.

A dedicated cell bank was established for developing new skin treatments using a single biopsy of fetal skin. Aging Of The Skin

Human skin, like all other organs, undergoes chronological aging. In addition, unlike most other organs, skin is in direct contact with the environment and therefore ages as a consequence of environmental damage. The primary environmental factor that causes human skin aging is ultraviolet irradiation from the sun. This sun-induced skin aging (called photoaging), like chronological aging, is a cumulative process. Aged and photo-aged skin manifests in fine and deep wrinkles, loss of elasticity, loss of translucency as well as in color and pigmentation changes.

During the last decade, substantial progress has been made in understanding cellular and molecular mechanisms that bring about chronological aging and photoaging. This emerging information reveals that chronological aging and photoaging share fundamental molecular pathways. Aged or photoaged skin show a decreased metabolic activity, decreased cutaneous immune responsiveness including a reduced cytokine production, delayed recovery of barrier function after damage and a reduced wound healing response due to decreased keratinocyte and fibroblast growth capacity. For instance, the time required to reconstitute a competent skin barrier after damage is twice that in the elderly compared to young adults.

On a molecular level, aged skin is characterized by the presence of abnormal, fragmented collagen fibers and diminished total collagen content. Solar ultraviolet irradiation is known to reduce the production of new collagen and causes the breakdown of collagen in the extracellular matrix.
